Αρχαία Μέλη / "Ancient" Melos
In traditional Orthodox Ecclesiastical Music most melodies are many centuries old. In particular, there are a number of compositions which are titled "ancient melos" (μέλος αρχαίον) or "old melos" (μέλος παλαιόν) and which are usually of unknown composer. They are very artistic works of music. Most "ancient mele" are slow pieces, slower than the ones we normally hear in chuch nowadays. They are chanted in special circumstances throughout the year depending on the experience of the psaltai. In this page, my aim is to list all those pieces named "ancient" and provide recordings for each.
