Γεννήθηκε το 1938 στο Κουκάκι Ανω Βάθειας Ευβοίας, πηρε το πτυχίο του από το Ελληνικό Ωδείο το 1964 και μουσικοδιδασκάλου το 1965 με καθηγητή τον Θεόδωρο Χατζηθεοδωρου.Ο πρώτος διδάσκαλός του ήταν ο πατέρας του Σταμάτης, εμβριθής γνώστης της Βυζ Μουσικής, λάτρης του πατριαρχικού ύφους όπως και ο Χαράλαμπος μετέπειτα που τον θεωρούσε καλύτερο όλων. Ο Χαράλαμπος αρχής γενομένης το 1964 διηκόνησε δεξιός ψάλτης στον Αγ Κωνσταντίνο Μοσχάτου, στην Αγ. Βαρβάρα Λυκόβρυσης, Αγ. Γεώργιο Ν. Ηρακλείου, Αγ. Γλυκερία Γαλατσίου επί 8 έτη και στη Χρυσοσπηλιώτισσα της οδού Αιόλου επί 24 έτη. Έχει οργανώσει διάφορες επίκαιρες συναυλίες Βυζαντινής Μουσικής και με μαθητές του με μεγάλη επιτυχία με τελευταία το Μάρτιο του 2005 στον Ι.Ν. Χρυσοσπηλιώτισσας προς τιμή του Χαρ. Ταλιαδώρου όπου προσήλθαν γνωστοί ιεροψάλτες των Αθηνών και έψαλλαν όπως ο Αθανάσιος Πέττας, οι αδελφοί Νταραβάνογλου και φυσικά ο Χαρ. Ταλιαδώρος. Ο κ. Καρακατσάνης, αθόρυβος ών, είναι σημαντικός τόσο για τον τρόπο απόδοσης των εκκλησιαστικών ύμνων με την σπουδαία φωνή του όσο και για την τεράστια συγγραφική του προσφορά αποδεικνύοντας την μοναδική γνώση της Βυζ. Μουσικής την οποία κατέχει όσο κανείς ίσως άλλος.

Αναφέρουμε το συγγραφικό του έργο: 8 Τόμοι Οκτώηχο Μουσικό Λειμωνάριο (κάθε ήχος και τόμος) με απάνθισμα μουσικών κειμένων από πολλούς επιφανείς ψάλτες καθώς και του ιδίου.Τριώδιο, Ακάθιστο Ύμνο, Πεντηκοστάριο, Θεία λειτουργία(με δικές του συνθέσεις)Και ετοιμάζει 12 Μουσικά Μηναία με πλήρεις ακολουθίες με τίτλο Μουσικός ενιαυτός.Επίσης έχει εκδόσει με τίτλο Βυζαντινή ποταμηίς Θεωρητικό Αποστόλου Κώνστα 1820 με δικούς του σχολιασμούς, θεωρητικό Βασ. Στεφανίδου 1819 με δική του μαθηματική ανάλυση των μουσικών κλιμάκων, Θεωρητικό Κυρίλλου Μαρμαρινού 1749, Α τόμο των αρχαίων κρατηματαρίων 1817, Α και Β τόμο απάντων Π Μπερεκέτου, ενώ είναι έτοιμα προς έκδοση Γ τόμος απάντων Π, Μπερεκέτου, Β τόμος Αρχαίων κρατηματαρίων,1817 και το Αναστασιματάριο Γεωργίου Ραιδεστινού.Υπολείπονται Δ τόμος απάντων Π Μπερεκέτου 1817 και Καλοφωνικό Ειρμολόγιο στην Αρχαία γραφή με παραλλαγή τη νέα γραφή. Επίσης τα ευρισκόμενα του Αρχ Πρωτοψάλτου Θρ. Στανίτσα και Γ. Γέμελου Πρωτοψάλτου Χίου και Δοξαστάριο Γ. Βινάκη. Ο κ Καρακατσάνης παρά την θαυμάσια εκτέλεση των ύμνων δεν έχει εκδόσει κασέτες.

Charalambos Karakatsanis, until recently (October 2005), protopsaltis in Chrisospiliotissa church, Athens Greece and today protopsaltis in Ag Georgios Cathedral in Aliveri Euboea , his birthplace, after publishing an important series of Byzantine music books, has been further devoted to the completion of unique publications in the area of the Greek Church music which will be referred in the present text. He is a chanter of low profile and of a special voice with personal expression as well as with a significant contribution to Byzantine music.

He was born in Koukaki Ano Vathia Euboea Greece in 1938, he obtained the diploma of the church chanter from the Greek Music School in 1964 anf the music teacher in 1965, from the famous teacher Th. Hatzitheodoros. His first teacher was his father Stamatios, an expert Byzantine music chanter, an adorer of the patriarchal reading style like Charalambos, who considered and keeps considering his father as the best of all.Charalambos starting in 1964 served as a first chanter in the following churches of Athens: Ag Constantinos Moschato, Ag Varvara Lykovrysi, Ag Georgios Neo Irakleio, Ag Glykeria Galatsi for eight years and last Chrysospiliotissa Aiolou str Athens centre for 24 years.He organized several seasonable concerts of Byzantine music both with students and known chanters with his last one in March 2005 in Chrysospiliotissa Church in honour of Charilaos Taliadoros, a famous chanter of Salonica and there came known chanters who chanted, like Ath. Pettas, Daravanoglou brothers and of course Charilaos Taliadoros.

Ch. Karakatsanis is important both for the way he chants the ecclesiastical hymns and the huge bulk of the contribution of published books proving the exceptional knowledge of the Byzantine Music, of which he has a command which only few experts have.A reference of his published work follows:8 volumes of oktoiho(eight- mode) musical leimonario (each mode is one volume containing complete vespers, matins and liturgy) with an anthology of musical texts of many famous composers and chanters as well as the author himself.Triodion, Akathistos hymn, Holy week, Pentikostarion, Divine Liturgy(with his own compositions).He also prepares 12 musical minea (texts chanted during a whole month) with complete services with a general title Musical Year. He also published comments on "Byzantine potamiis" a theory book by Apostolos Konstas 1820, also a theory book by V. Stefanidis 1819, where he tries a mathematical analysis of the musical scales, a theory book by Kyrillos Marmarinos 1749, also a first volume of the "ancient kratimataria" 1817, the first and second volume of the whole work by P. Bereketis (Apanta), while the third volume of this work, the second volume of the "ancient kratimataria" 1817 and the "Anastasimatarion" by G. Redestinos are ready to be published. The fourth volume of the whole work (Apanta) by P. Mpereketis 1817 and the "kalofonikon eirmologion"with the use of the ancient notation in parallel variation with the use of the new notation. Moreover the "Evriskomena"by Thr. Stanitsas Protopsaltis(First chanter) of the Great Church of Christ and Georgios Gemelos Protopsaltis on Chios island as well as "Doxastarion" by Georgios Vinakis. Mr. Karakatsanis has not published any commercial recordings.
