Dimitrios Galanis was born in Patras in 1966. He studied since 8 years old with Protopsaltis Spyros Georgakopoulos in Patras. At 14 years of age he was appointed left psaltis of St George "Klauss". In 1982 he received his Degree in Byzantine Music from Apollonion Odeion and in 1984 his Diploma in Byzantine Music from Polymnios Music School with Excellent marks He studied Western music. Today he is the protopsaltis of St Barbara, Patras.

He has composed a "Byzantine Oratorium of Christmas" (1991). He has published the Anastasimatarion of Ioannis Protopsaltis in parallage and melos. In 1994 he recorded the Small Paraklesis and hmyns from the service of St Alexios the Man of God on request from the Monastery of Lavra, Kalavryta, Greece. In 2007, he recorded a CD with hymns of St Konstantinos from Hydra. In 1990 he became a high school music teacher and since 1991 he is a teacher of Greek Traditional Music at the Music-orientated High School of Patras. He published a CD with folk songs and hymns with the choir of the school in 2006. In 1998 he founded the Byzantine Choir of Patras. In the same year he started teaching at the Mozart Conservatorium of Patras. In 2000, he was appointed teacher of the Byzantine Music School of the Holy Metropolis of Patras. He also became Artistic Director of the sectors of folk music and folk instruments.

He has chanted in many feasts as a soloist and with his choir. He has taken part in many seminars on Byzantine Music and he has organised many of them in cooperation with well known teachers, protopsaltai and musicologists. He benefited from his acquaintance to protopsaltis Dimitrios Nerantzis with whom he co-chanted many times and whose style and psaltic expression he followed to a degree.

His study next to protopsaltis Vasileios Nonis was also important, deepening his understanding of Papadic and Calophonic pieces.

In 2005 in enrolled in the Postgraduate Course on Byzantine Music at the Athens Consevatorium.

Today, as a protopsaltis and teacher of the Divine Art he faithfully tries to transmit and preserve our cultural heritage with respect to the Psaltic Art and the genuine Greek folk song.
