Εξέδυσάν Με / Eksedysan Me
Δοξαστικόν Αίνων Όρθρου Μ. Παρασκευής / Doxastikon of the Lauds of Great Friday
The doxastikon "Eksedysan me" is one of the most popular and beloved pieces of the
Church year. The most widespread composition is by Konstantinos Pringos and represents
a modification of a piece by Nikolaos Protopsaltis of Smyrna (according to musicologist
I. Arvanitis). According to Angelos Boudouris, ex-First Domestichos of the Great
Church, Nikolaos' innovatory compositions were banned in the Patriarchal church.
Pringos himself never made a secret that such pieces of his were not meant to be
chanted at the Patriarchal cathedral of St. George. Despite the overhelming popularity
of Pringos' piece among various chanting schools (as attested by sound examples
below), the Patriarchal tradition as expressed by current Archon Protopsaltis Leonidas
Asteris still shows preference of classical lines.
