Tou Diepnou Sou
Dear Collaegues,
There are two version of Tou Deipnou Sou being chanted. There is a short one which has
<< Mnisthiti mou Kyrie en to Vasileia sou>>
and the longer one which has
<< Mnisthiti mou Kyrie, otan elthis en to Vasileia sou>>
From what I can discover the short version is the original and although
it does not agree with the words of the thief on the cross [Luke 23,42],
it was slected this way for poetic reasons. However Georgios Raidestinos
uses the longer version in his 1884 Megali Evdomas, and it seems that
from then on composers composed the Cheroubic Hymn/Communion Hymn
with the longer text. The words of <<Tou Diepnou Sou>> also appear in
the Ieratikon as a prayer that the priest says shortly before <<Meta Fovou>>,
however this appearance in the Ieratikon is probably a recent addition and
Ioannis Fontoulis makes no reference to it in his commentary on the liturgy.
I suspect that at the time Raidestinos used the longer text, there must have
been some discussion at the Patriarchate about its use. Of course in modern
times the chanters at the Patriarchate still use the longer text to this day. I suspect
the chnage was introduced to cite teh text of the thief correctly, but that later versions
of the Ieratikon have not kept apace with this.
Can anyone clarify this? Is there support for my theory?
