I've never bothered to ask this before, and I don't know why it didn't occur to me before to ask because it was a deterring factor in coming... is there translation available for the (pause for clearing of throat) non-Greek speakers?

Dear John,

The presentations can be in Greek or English. Our past presenters from outside of Greece gave their lectures in English.

In past conferences, where there were non-Greek-speaking participants, we provided translators at the end of each Greek presentation which summarised the talk.

If we know ahead of time (i.e. at least two months in advance of the October date) that we will have at least ten non-Greek speakers formally registered, it would justify our engaging translators. Otherwise, we cannot justify this luxury.

Also, most of our Greek-speaking presenters are fluent in English and they have always generously recapped their talks in English when requested during the Q/A period...

Just out of my idle curiosity, what is the average turn out? Are all attendees required to be speakers or are there who are simply interested in furthering our own education?

The turnout has depended on the gravitas of the speaker. The more renowned speakers are more popular, the less renowned attract a smaller audience. Registered participant numbers (not all are speakers) have varied over the years.

The conferences are what one makes of them. Some speakers have come only once-for their particular talk. Other non-speaking participants came en masse to listen to their teacher/professor/best friend speak only. Others attended religiously and attentively every session.

A conference is enriched by the quality, the innovation and the depth of the subject matter as well as the new insights presented (no matter how controversial). In this, I believe the previous conferences have succeeded.

Please visit the previous conference sites (http://www.asbmh.pitt.edu/page9/page9.html) to see if the subject matter and the speakers meet your standards. If they do, great- we hope to see you in attendance. If not, there are other conferences that take place in Greece that you could consider.

"Byzantine Musical Culture"

DEDICATED TO THE GREAT MANUEL VRYENNIOS

OCTOBER 10-13, 2013
Peania, Attica, Greece

It is a pleasure to announce the Fourth International Conference "Byzantine Musical Culture", a series which began in 2007 and takes place every two years. The Conferences focus on all scholarly musical, musicological, artistic, poetic and literary aspects relevant to the global theme of Byzantine Musical Culture of that year and are open to academic scholars as well as practicing musicians and independent scholars. The Conferences also includes musical soirees, cultural events and visits to theme-related sites of interest.

The Conferences’ general focus on "Byzantine Musical Culture" shapes this year's theme, "Historic Figures: Composers, Poets, Teachers" along with the dedication of the Conference to “Manuel Vryennios: Mathematician, Astronomer, Musician, Poet, Diplomat”.

For more information, abstract submission and to communicate with the Society, please follow either of the weblinks above.

N.B.: This Year's Conference, just like the previous one, is under the Direct Aegis of the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All-Holiness Bartholomew I.

Thank you. It comes at what is very well going to be a sad time. Zoe's father is not doing well, and is starting to deteriorate. Please pray for Frank and for us (that request extends to the other members of this forum as well).

I look forward to the videos.
