Classification of the Menaion Services, according to the Typikon

Παναγιώτης

σκολιοὶ γὰρ λογισμοί, χωρίζουσιν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ
From the Typikon perspective there are 3 kinds of Saints Services according to the Menaion.

The classification helps us determining easily the typikon of Matins and Vespers, especially on the daily services. The classification, was first organized by Georgios Rigas in his Typikon, but it is also applying to the (used in the Greek Churches) Typikon of Violakis (Ecumenical Patriarchate).

1. The first Service (let’s call it, “Service of Saint celebrated in 8”):

They are those Saints who have at least one of the following:

Small Vespers
3 Readings in the Vespers
Kathismata for each Stichologia in the Matins
Kathisma of Polyeleos in the Matins

2. The second Service (let’s call it, “Service of Saint celebrated in 6”):

They are those Saints who have nothing of the above, but have at least one of the following:

Aposticha of Vespers
Doxastikon of the Aposticha of Praises (in the Matins)
Stichera of Praises
Great Doxology

3. The third Service is (let’s call it, “Service of non-celebrated Saint”):

They are those Saints who have nothing of the above, but have at least one of the following:

The necessary parts of a Saint Service (i.e. 3 prosomoia in the Vespers, and a Canon in the Matins)
Doxastikon of the Esperia [and Doxastikon of Aposticha] of Vespers

Some comments (more to follow):

For example on 3/12, Prophet Sophonias, if we see inside the Menaion, his Service belongs to the 3rd case (“Service of non-celebrated Saint”).

When there is a day of a “non-celebrated” Saint, and this Saint has no Idiomelon Doxastikon in the Vespers (i.e. Doxastikon with own music), then on daily Saturday, we chant Allelouia instead of Theos Kyrios in the Matins, and we say no Apolytikon of the Saint, but of the day.

For the daily services, Katavasiai are only chanted, for Saint belonging in the 1st Service case, else we say instead the Heirmos of 3, 6, 8, 9 odes.

So when there is Small Doxology, there are no Katavasiai chanted, we say instead the Heirmos of 3, 6, 8, 9 odes, in the Matins.
