This is what Chrysanthos says about composing in non-traditional scales:

"It is deemed reasonable for Church musicians to use one of those
(740) chroai (scales that he explained earlier) in compositions. On the condition that
some of their predecessors used the same chroa (scale) in some composition and
also that the chroa (scale) is close in sound to one of the eight modes
. For instance Daniel
Protopsaltis in his Doxology he used the Chroa (Zw Nh Pa Bou Ga# Di Ke# Zw) but
the same chroa had been used already by Balasios Iereus and Petros Bereketis
in their Kalophonic Heirmoi".
