CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Psaltic Art and Musicology of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, under the aegis of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias, announces the 1st International Interdisciplinary Musicological Conference with title: «Psaltiki as an autonomous science: Scientific branches – Related Scienftific Fields – Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Interaction.»
The Conference will take place in the Conference Center of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias, in Melissiatika, Volos, Greece, between June 30th and July 2nd, 2014.
The Conference aims to addressing the Psaltic Art (the art of Chanting in the Byzantine, Post-Byzantine, Modern and Contemporary period of the Eastern Orthodox Church) as an autonomous science, and also recognizing the necessary definitions of its own scientific branches, the related scientific topics and those of the relevant sciences.
The Conference wishes to promote the interdisciplinary approach to the Psaltic Art, leading to interaction among institutions which, up to the present day, have not attempted a systematic approach to it.
The Conference is open to all the scientific approaches on the study of Psaltic Art. Thus, since there are no separate thematic categories, there is an invitation to all the scientific disciplines to study the possibility of a correlation of their scientific fields with the Psaltic Art. Theology, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, Philology, History, Law, Psychology, Medicine, Mathematics, Natural Science, Computer Science, Technology and, of course, Musicology; all the sciences are invited to find fields for studies in Psaltic art or topics for interaction with it.
In addition, the Conference aims to giving space for Round Table discussions on every possible topic related to the Psaltic Art. Speakers who wish to contribute to the Round Tables are kindly requested to submit a proposal to the Organizing Committee of the Conference.
The ultimate goal of the Conference is to initiate the creation of a network of institutions relative to the Psaltic Art, which can promote the acquaintance and communication on the topic all over the world, including all scientists and institutions, informing them about the research in progress and, in general, to promote the approaching of Psaltic Art as an independent science.
Proposals for contribution in the Conference must be submitted to the Organizing Committee of the conference, to the address tomeaspsaltikis@gmail.com, not later than January 15th, 2014. Proposals must include title, abstract (not longer than 300 words) and CV of the speaker (not longer than 200 words). Alternatively, they can be submitted by ordinary post, to the address: Volos Academy of Theological Studies – 1st Musicological Conference, Thessalia Conference Center, Melissiatika Volou GR-38500 Greece.
Selection of proposals will be announced not later than February 1st, 2014.
The confirmation of participation, along with the payment of the participation fee, must be not later than March 1st, 2014.
Presentations of individual papers must not be longer than 20 minutes and will be followed by a short 10-minute discussion.
Papers must be presented either in Greek or English language. Speakers who choose the Greek language, must submit an English translation of their paper as well, not later than June 15th, 2014 (in .doc or .pdf. form), in order to facilitate the work of the translators. Translations of English papers into the Greek language are also welcome.
The Conference participation fee is fixed as 40 € per person, and it includes all meals starting with the dinner of June 30th and ending with the dinner of July 2nd, the Conference folder, coffees and cookies for the breaks, and acceptance in all the musical activities that will accompany the Conference, as well as the publication of the Conference proceedings online (in pdf. form, as submitted by the participants). It does NOT include expenses for the case of printed publication of the Conference proceedings.
The Conference also offers the possibility of accommodation in the Dormitories of the 2004 Olympic Games. The price for this type of accommodation is 10 € per person per night in double bedded rooms. Additionally, hotels and guest houses in Volos or on the nearby mountain of Pelion can be suggested to the participants upon request.
