Bronze statuette of Cybele on a cart drawn by lions
Roman, 2nd half of 2nd century A.D.
Metropolitan Museum of Art. Picture taken by Peterjr1961.

''The cult of the Anatolian mother goddess Cybele was introduced into Rome during the Second Punic War in the late third century B.C. and remained popular until early Christian times. The goddess is shown with her usual attributes, a patera (libation bowl) in her right hand and a large tympanum (drum) in her left. But instead of flanking her throne as they normally do, here the two oversized lions pull a chariot. This elaborate group comes from a fountain, in which spouts projected from the open mouths of the lions. The original cart, harness, and throne no longer survive; the rear left wheel is a nineteenth-century restoration.''

Attic red figure hydria (kalpis)
Peleas Painter
ca. 430 BC
Athens, National Archeological Museum

Apart from the well trained in music and dance hetairai that participate in komoi (revelries) and the symposion, iconography informs us that they were musically trained Athenian ladies, who practiced music amongst themselves. This is a time that also the Muses pick up their instruments in iconography and offer their divine music to the eye.

Painter of the Athenian Agora P14384
ca. 460-450 BC
Munich, Staatliche Antikensammlungen

There is practically no information available where the musical education of Athenian ladies in the 5th century BC is concerned. Literature is virtually silent on this matter. However, iconography offers some valuable clues. In this rare representation five young women stand inside a building with columns holding musical instruments (lyra and aulos). Would it be too far fetched to "see" a music school for women in this picture?

Οι πληροφορίες μας για την μουσική εκπαίδευση των γυναικών της Αθήνας κατά τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ. είναι εξαιρετικά ελλιπείς. Η γραμματειακές πηγές ουσιαστικά σιωπούν. Ωστόσο, η εικονογραφία προσφέρει ορισμένα πολύτιμα στοιχεία. Σε αυτή τη σπάνια παράσταση πέντε νέες στέκονται στο εσωτερικό ενός κτηρίου με κίονες κρατώντας μουσικά όργανα (λύρα και αυλούς). Θα ήταν άραγε πολύ τολμηρό σε αυτή την εικόνα "βλέπαμε" ένα μουσικό σχολείο για γυναίκες;

Attic red figure skyphos found in Cerveteri
Pistoxenos Painter, ca. 470-460 BC
Schwerin, Staatliches Museum

''On one side of this vase Linos teaches the lyra to Herakle's little brother Iphikles who observes carefully, following the example of his teacher. On the wall hangs a "cradle cithara" a distinct type of lyre that often appears in school scenes. The hero has not arrived yet. His is represented on the other side of the vase on his way to the music lesson followed by his paidagogos Geropso who is holding his lyra.

Attic red figure stamnos
Tyszkiewicz Painter, ca. 480 BC
Boston, Museum of Fine Arts

Not all music lessons went smoothly. According to the myth (Apollodorus Biblioteca B 4.9) young Herakles was taught music together with his brother Iphikles by the famous musician Linos. One day the always quick tempered Herakles was so furious by his teachers comments that he hit him on the head with a stool (or according to Apollodorus with his kithara) so hard that he killed him on the spot. On side A of this vessel we observe Linos sinking into a chair, holding a lyra with left hand while with his right he tries to fend off Herakles, who is about to strike him again with footstool. A diptychon (writing tablet) hangs on the wall. This type negative school scene featuring Herakles as a bad student appears on a number of attic vases in the beginning of the 5th century BC.

Βοστώνη, Museum of Fine Arts.

"A Music Lesson" of the 5th cent. BC

Attic red-figure cup found in Cerveteri (ancient Caere)
Douris, 490-480 BC
Berlin, Antikenmuseum F 2285

''Let’s begin with an emblematic scene from ancient Athens. The famous Douris cup (a drinking vessel most commonly used in the symposion) is decorated with two school scenes coming from the beginning of the 5th century BC. On the left a young pupil sits opposite the music teacher, the “kitharistes” and practices on the lyra by following the teacher’s example. On the right a second youth recites a poem written on the scroll held by another teacher, the “grammatistes”. On the far right the “paidagogos”, an old slave that has brought the boy to the teachers' house observes the lesson. Several objects hang on the wall over the figures’ heads: two cups, a kados (bucket), a sybene (an aulos case) and still another lyra. In ancient Greece the ability to sing and play a musical instrument (preferably a lyre) was considered a sign of nobility and the high level of education that comes with it. Even the mighty Achilles plays the phorminx and sings to it in his free time (Iliad 10.186-89). Many representations on attic vases depict the music lesson in the 5th cent. BC reflecting the importance of musical education in the formation of the future citizen of the Athenian republic.
