Alexander Lingas has recently published the following study: "Late Byzantine Cathedral Liturgy and the Service of the Furnace", Approaching the Holy Mountain. Art and Liturgy at St Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai. Edited by Sh. E.J. Gerstel and R.S. Nelson (= Cursor Mundi 11). Turnhout (Belgium) Brepols 2010, pp. 179-230.
Portions of the study were presented as papers at the 1993 Byzantine Studies Conference at Princeton University, the 1998 meeting of the Royal Musical Association at New College in Oxford, and the Byzantine Seminar of King's College, London.
The author lays out the 'backstory' of the Service of the Furnace. "The recension of this cathedral office in Sinai, MS 1527", he says, "represents a late and unusual chapter in the long tale of interchange between Byzantium's cathedral and monastic rites. In particular, the provenance of its texts and music will eventually be traced back from St Catherine's via Creta to eleventh-century Constantinople".

Unfortunately, only members of the Academic Staff of the Flemish Universities in Belgium have access (but not free) to the article ...

I think anybody can purchase the article (for 24 USD or 17 EUR).

Brepols publications in general are not exactly cheap
